The 24 Mountains

The 24 mountains divide the compass into 15° sectors, three for each of the eight directions. They're the ring every house is measured against in Flying Star feng shui. Click a sector to see its degrees, element and polarity, or type a bearing to find its mountain.

Where the names come from

The 24 names are drawn from three sets: the twelve earthly branches (the zodiac animals' characters), eight of the ten heavenly stems (Wu and Ji, the two Earth stems, belong to the centre and are left out), and the four corner trigrams Gen, Xun, Kun and Qian. The four cardinal trigrams don't appear; their places are taken by the branches Zi, Mao, Wu and You.

Earth, Heaven and Man

Within each direction the three mountains are called the Earth (地元龙), Heaven (天元龙) and Man (人元龙) "dragons", in clockwise order. Mountains in the same group across all eight directions share the same yin–yang pattern, which is why a Flying Star chart depends on which of the three your house faces:

That polarity decides whether the mountain and water stars of a natal chart fly forwards or backwards.

Measuring which mountain a house faces

Use the facing finder on a satellite map, the phone compass at the door, or a physical luo pan. When the reading is within a degree or two of a boundary, take several readings — the mountain matters more than the exact degree.
