What the annual chart is
Flying Star feng shui (Xuan Kong Fei Xing, 玄空飞星) moves nine "stars" — the numbers 1 to 9 of the Lo Shu square — through the nine sectors of a building. Each year one star occupies the centre and the rest follow a fixed path: centre, Northwest, West, Northeast, South, North, Southwest, East, Southeast. The centre star counts down by one every year. In 2026 it was 1; in 2027 it is 9; in 2028 it will be 8.
The annual chart is the same for every building. A full Flying Star reading also uses each house's natal chart, which depends on when it was built and which way it faces — the annual stars are layered on top of that. The numbers and their path come from the Lo Shu square.
2027 sector by sector
| Sector | 2027 star | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Centre | 9 Purple Fire | The star of the current 20-year period (Period 9, 2024–2043). Associated with celebration, recognition and future prospects. Keeping the centre open and bright is the usual advice. |
| Northwest | 1 White Water | A favorable star linked with romance, new opportunities and career moves. |
| West | 2 Black Earth | The illness star. In 2027 it shares the West with the Three Killings, which makes the West the most sensitive sector of the year. Traditionally kept calm, with no renovation. |
| Northeast | 3 Jade Wood | Associated with arguments and friction. The Sui Po also sits here, in the Chou sector. |
| South | 4 Green Wood | The study and creativity star — a good year for a desk or study area in the South. |
| North | 5 Yellow Earth | The Five Yellow, the most serious of the annual afflictions. Avoid starting work, drilling or digging in the North of the house or garden this year. |
| Southwest | 6 White Metal | Authority, mentors and support. The Tai Sui sits in the first sub-sector (Wei, 202.5°–217.5°), so avoid facing that direction for important work. |
| East | 7 Red Metal | Associated with loss and sharp words. A sector to keep tidy rather than activate. |
| Southeast | 8 White Earth | The great wealth star of the previous period. Since Period 9 began in 2024 it is considered past its peak but still mildly supportive. |
Tai Sui, Sui Po and the Three Killings
These three are set by the year's animal, not by the flying stars. The Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter) sits in the sector of the year's branch — for the Goat that is Wei, the first sub-sector of the Southwest. The Sui Po, or Year Breaker, is directly opposite. The Three Killings occupy a whole cardinal direction opposite the year's "frame" of three animals; for Goat, Rabbit and Pig years that is the West. The traditional advice is the same for all three: don't start construction there, and avoid sitting with your back to the Three Killings.
When does 2027 start for feng shui?
On 4 February 2027, 09:46 China Standard Time — the start of spring (Lichun), not Lunar New Year (6 February 2027) and not 1 January. Until that moment the 2026 chart, with White 1 in the centre, still applies. The 2027 chart then runs until 4 February 2028, 15:31.
Questions
Why is South at the top of traditional charts?
Chinese maps and feng shui charts were drawn facing south, the direction of the sun. The stars are the same either way; use the toggle to switch to the orientation you find easier.
Is the chart different for my house?
No — the annual chart is the same everywhere. What changes is which room falls in which sector, and that depends on the way your house faces.
What about the monthly stars?
Each solar month has its own chart that layers over the year. See the monthly flying stars for any month, and the yearly afflictions for other years.
